Best Time to Visit Kashmir

A season-by-season look at Kashmir travel from Srinagar: gardens, meadow roads, snow, and what we actually change in an itinerary when the weather turns.

Shikaras and houseboats on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir

People ask for the best time to visit Kashmir as if the valley had a single perfect week. It does not. Srinagar is a year-round city base. The meadow towns — Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg — answer to snow, cloud, and whether a road is worth the drive that morning.

This guide is how Aleeza Travels thinks about seasons when we write a Kashmir itinerary. It is not a ranking of tourist numbers, and it does not invent weather averages. If your dates are fixed, we plan around them. If they are flexible, we ask what you want the trip to feel like.

How we judge a season

Three things matter more than a calendar slogan: whether you want gardens or snow, how much driving you will accept, and whether anyone in the group is uncomfortable with cold or height. A couple on a honeymoon and a family with school holidays are not looking for the same Kashmir.

  • Srinagar gardens and Dal Lake work in more months than a high meadow overnight.
  • Gulmarg’s gondola and the last stretch of road are weather decisions, not promises printed in March.
  • Pahalgam side valleys such as Aru and Betaab are easier in the warmer months.
  • Sonamarg is more seasonal than the city. Winter access can simply be the wrong idea that week.

April to June

This is the window many first-time visitors picture: gardens opening in Srinagar, meadows greening, and driving days that are usually straightforward. Tulip season in the city is short and crowded when it overlaps your dates — we only build it in when it actually does.

A classic circuit in this period often starts in Srinagar, adds a Gulmarg night or a long meadow day, then uses Pahalgam for river time. See our Kashmir tour packages for starting outlines, then adjust nights once we know your arrival time.

July and August

School holidays make this the busiest stretch for families. Afternoons can be warm in the city; meadow towns stay cooler. Cloud and rain can hide a ridge view. We still run trips — we just start garden and valley outings early and do not promise a clear Apharwat panorama.

If you need this window because of school dates, say so. A Kashmir family tour in midsummer is about pacing, not about pretending the roads are empty.

September and October

Clearer air, chinar colour in Srinagar, and a slower feel than peak summer. Couples often prefer this stretch. Meadow walking is still the point in Gulmarg and Pahalgam until the cold settles in. It is a strong time for a honeymoon that is not built around snow.

November to March

Srinagar in winter is a city trip with lake light and cold evenings. Houseboats are a request, not a default. Gulmarg can be a snow destination; ski hire and gondola phases are local, ticketed, and can stop for wind. We do not publish slope reports here.

Day trips to Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, or Sonamarg are confirmed only when the road that week supports them. A winter quote from us will say what we will not attempt.

If your dates are already fixed

Tell us the month first, then the group. We will not move you to a “better” season on paper and then leave the itinerary unchanged. Nights in each place, and whether Gulmarg is an overnight or a day, are the levers we actually pull.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one best month for every Kashmir trip?

No. Garden time, meadow walking, and snow are different trips. We match the month to what you actually want to do, then check road and gondola status closer to travel.

Can we visit Kashmir in winter?

Yes, with honest pacing. Srinagar stays open as a city base. Gulmarg can be a snow town. Sonamarg and some meadow day trips may not be worth attempting that week. We say so in the quote instead of hoping the road behaves.

When are the Mughal gardens at their best?

Spring into early summer is the kindest window for gardens in Srinagar. Peak holiday weeks are busier. Autumn is a strong second choice for colour and clearer air.
